A Lofty Venture For Starwood In The UK… | Starwood Hotels & Resorts announced this week that it is to bring its aloft brand to the UK. The aloft London ExCeL is to be developed by international venue development and management company Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) at the ExCel exhibition centre, in London's Royal Docks area. The 253-room hotel is expected to open at the end of 2011, just in time for the 2012 Olympic Games. The hotel will be Starwood's second aloft property in Europe, as the 147-room aloft Brussels Schuman is to open in Belgium on 1 September 2010. ADNEC is the parent company of ExCeL London, and it also owns Starwood's aloft debut in the Middle East: the 408-room aloft Abu Dhabi.

…And A Belgravia Beginning For Thompson Hotels | Another US hospitality company has also announced a debut in the UK this week. Thompson Hotels, which has five properties in New York's Manhattan, including the original 60 Thompson in SoHo, and which recently added a hotel in Toronto to its portfolio, is crossing the Atlantic to London. The summer of 2011 will see the 85-room Belgraves opening, following the refurbishment of the present Sheraton Belgravia, owned by the Hong Kong-based Harilela Group, with Thompson Hotels taking over responsibility for its management. Interiors will be by British designer Tara Bernerd, and the architectural design by EPR Architects. HVS has been pleased to advise Thompson Hotels on this important international development.

Marriott Courts Europe | Marriott International is continuing its expansion in Europe with the opening of two more Courtyard by Marriott properties on the continent. The global hotel company has signed a long-term management agreement with Guernsey-based Ablon Group Ltd for the 235-room Courtyard Budapest City Center, which opened as Marriott's first Courtyard in Hungary. The Courtyard St Petersburg Center West/Pushkin Hotel opened in St Petersburg, Russia, under a long-term agreement between Marriott and OOO Stroiprogress. This 273-room hotel is Marriott's third Courtyard property in Russia and its second in St Petersburg.

Starwood Gives A Lot Of Luxury To Greece | Starwood Hotels & Resorts has opened its seventh Luxury Collection Resort in Greece. Starwood teamed up with mixed-use resort developer TEMES to develop The Romanos, A Luxury Collection Resort. The 321-room property is the first hotel to open in TEMES' flagship mixed-use destination Costa Navarino, in the Messinia region, on the southwest coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. This is Starwood's ninth hotel in Greece overall; however, hotel number ten is not far behind and it won't be situated too far away from number nine. The 445-room Westin Resort, Costa Navarino is scheduled to open on 1 July 2010 as part of the same Costa Navarino development.

Spanish Sunshine For Dubai | Sol Meliá currently has 300 hotels, under its eight brands, operating across 30 countries, but there is one part of the world that has been waiting patiently for the Spanish hotel company to come its way; this wait is now over, however, as Sol Meliá announced this week that it is to become the first Spanish hotel company to enter the Middle East market. The company has signed a management agreement for the 167-room Meliá Dubai, which is expected to open in the emirate of Dubai, UAE, at the beginning of next year.

Gucci To Get On The Catwalk In Dubai | The emirate of Dubai in the UAE is fast becoming a centre for fashion…not just because of its huge shopping malls but also because it is the chosen location for the debut of two of the world's designer hotel brands. Giorgio Armani's 160-room Armani Hotel Dubai opened earlier this year and the first Gucci-branded property from Elisabettea Gucci Hotels is expected to open in the emirate by the end of 2010. Construction work on the building made to house the 87-room hotel, which is being developed by Abu Dhabi-based company Baitek International Real Estate, has now been completed but work on the interior is yet to start.

Gladen's Tidings | The news from Spain by Esther Gladen, Business and Market Intelligence Analyst, HVS Madrid. Wyndham Hotel Group has agreed to purchase the Tryp brand from Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts for approximately US$43 million. The brand is expected to be renamed Tryp by Wyndham. Wyndham will enter into a license agreement with the current 91 Tryp hotels throughout Europe and South America that will continue to be owned, operated, managed or licensed by Sol Meliá. Wyndham and Sol Meliá plan to form a strategic alliance to develop the Tryp brand globally and market the hotels through their central reservations systems and loyalty programmes. Meanwhile, Pierre & Vacances has recently opened its fourth resort in Catalonia: the 48-unit Empuriabrava Costa Brava. Pierre & Vacances signed a management agreement for the property with Solvia Gestión Inmobiliaria, a subsidiary of Banco Sabadell, at the beginning of this year.
